Saint Joseph's College

21st Century Campaign

Campaign Vision

The 21st Century Campaign for Saint Joseph's College is an ambitious fundraising program to address a comprehensive plan to move SJC into a confident future. A successful $12.5 million campaign will bring the infusion of private support necessary to fulfill our bold aspirations as a Catholic liberal arts college. It will signify to our students, faculty and staff, alumni, friends and the greater higher education community that Saint Joseph's College will live out our Puma Pride through the intellectual, social, and moral formation of graduates who will truly make a difference in their families and communities.

At the heart of the 21st Century Campaign: Preserving Tradition…Securing Our Future is our focus of attracting qualified students and encouraging them to be successful at Saint Joseph's College. Enrollment and endowment are what will secure our future. The planning process clarified for us the urgent needs that will allow us to remain a small, affordable, Catholic liberal arts school. It demanded that we honor the great tradition handed to us by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. It demanded, too, that we build a future on a foundation of sound business practices.

The Campaign priorities may be summarized under the headings of Campus, Community, and Curriculum. We have a great liberal arts tradition, a beautiful but aging campus, an engaged faculty, and a future full of possibilities for the young people who find the personalized learning at Saint Joseph's College exactly what they need to flourish in life and faith. We are dedicated to competitive salaries and funded scholarships; to outstanding academic programs, athletics, and fine arts; to improved buildings, grounds, and technology.

Join us in this great enterprise. Join us as we prudently and wisely address those projects, both physical and financial, that will position the College for a strong and prosperous future.

President

Campaign Leadership

During his term as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Saint Joseph’s College, Jim Madden ’64 worked with other Trustees and College administrators in guiding a careful and comprehensive long-range planning process.  He now serves as the Chairman of the 21st Century Campaign: Preserving Tradition…Securing Our Future.

“This is clearly the most important project Saint Joseph’s College has undertaken in all the years I have served on the Board of Trustees, and I am deeply committed to see it to a successful conclusion.  This is what the College needs to secure its future. I have seen the dramatic commitment to this Campaign by all the Trustees and many others. But we will need everybody’s help to make this a success.”

Kresge Challenge: $12.5 million by June 30, 2008

Saint Joseph's College received a grant from The Kresge Foundation in the amount of $750,000, their largest award, toward the construction of athletic facilities and renovation of residential, academic, and library facilities in conjunction with the College's 21st Century Campaign: Preserving Tradition…Securing Our Future. The Foundation's core grant-making activity is its Challenge Grants program. The challenge grant is intended to help the College in its public phase to meet the Campaign goal of $12.5 million by June 30, 2008.

SJC President Ernest Mills, in announcing The Kresge Foundation challenge, said, "The Kresge Foundation is a major national foundation supporting American higher education. Their endorsement of our Campaign and the value of Saint Joseph's and its mission with their maximum award is a credit to our College."

The Kresge Foundation focuses on opportunities to strengthen leadership and giving through challenge grants for capital projects. Grant recipients raise initial funds toward their respective projects before requesting Foundation support. Kresge grants are then made on a challenge basis, requiring the raising of the remaining balance by a deadline. It is an "all or nothing" challenge. President and Chief Executive Officer of The Kresge Foundation Rip Rapson said, "With the aid of this challenge grant, we hope that SJC's Campaign can become an even more strategic opportunity to connect with stakeholders and reach out to new donors, volunteers, participants, and the general community."

Campaign Priorities

Improvements to Academic Centers

Arts and Science Building | $985,000
This building has been in constant use since 1914. Modern technology, renovated corridors and classrooms, and climate controls are needed to preserve this important building and transform it into a first-class educational facility.

Robinson Memorial Library | $1.6 million
The integration of fundamental modern technology is a major focus for this 28,000 square foot learning center at SJC. Recent upgrades need to be enhanced with research hubs, group discussion space, climate controls and accessibility for the disabled.

Theatre | $965,000
This grand old structure in the Arts and Science Building hasn't hosted a major renovation in more than six decades. The Theatre will be restored and enhanced in its ambience, infrastructure, climate control, seating and access. An endowment also is necessary for upkeep.

The Rev. Charles Banet, C.PP.S. Core Education Center | $270,000
Although this is a modern signature building on campus, its technology is more than 10 years old and needs to be replaced and updated. The building's name gives rise to its importance - acting as a key academic center for SJC's award-winning Core Curriculum.

Improvements to Athletics

Fieldhouse | $2.7 million
The oldest athletic facility on campus dates back more than 65 years. With half the student body registered as student athletes, this facility needs more room for this growing population on campus. By creating a new locker room, office facilities, and meeting spaces, the Fieldhouse can better serve its primary residents.

Football Field | $700,000
Football at SJC is a tradition which spans more than a century. The football field needs facility improvements that include renovated and new bleachers, fencing, a new scoreboard, and improved press box access. This renovation is needed to keep the tradition alive for the next 100 years for the athletes and fans alike.

Hanson Recreational Center | $350,000
Just like in the Fieldhouse, the foot traffic from an athletic student body has worn out this playing court. The playing surfaces in both the Fieldhouse (back court) and Hanson Recreational Center have used up their tred-life and now must be replaced.

Improvements to Campus Life

Noll and Bennett Halls | $1.3 million
On campus housing is an important recruiting tool for college life in the 21st century. In order to attract and retain resident students, these two 50-year-old buildings need to be updated and modernized for the 190 students who will call them home. Both buildings need improvements in rooms and lounges, as well as hallways and installation of modern sprinkler systems.

Endowment
In order to provide a quality college education well into the 21st century, Saint Joseph's College must provide predictable sources of income above and beyond tuition. Establishing the following endowments at SJC, in addition to incorprating project endowments into all capital priorities, secures an academic center of learning for generations to come:

Founder's Fund | $1 million
This fund's purpose is to provide scholarships to worthy students in honor of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. This fund will make it possible for future generations of students to attend SJC.

Chapel Complex Endowment | $1 million
The icon of SJC is nearly 100 years old and needs constant attention. When established, this endowment will free the Chapel from competing for College operating funds.

Gift Planning

Please contact Maureen Egan '90, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Marketing, to discuss the full range of gift planning services that further the mission of the College, while providing financial advantages for the donor. Such gifts can include:

Securities
A gift of appreciated securities saves taxes twice. You receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of your securities if you've held the securities for more than one year, and you avoid capital gain tax on the appreciation.

Real Estate
A personal residence, business, farm or other real estate may be given to Saint Joseph's College. An outright gift of appreciated property you have held for more than one year may result in an immediate income tax charitable deduction for up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income.

Closely Held Stock
Individuals who own closely held stock can save twice on their taxes when giving to Saint Joseph's College; first with a personal income tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock, and second when you avoid capital gain tax on the appreciation. If the College subsequently sells the shares to the corporation, and you have controlling interest in your corporation, you can maintain that control. This redemption of the stock reduces accumulated earnings, and the accompanying tax liability, and the stock is removed from your taxable estate.

IRA
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows individuals who are at least 70 1/2 years of age to transfer funds directly from their IRAs to Saint Joseph's College tax-free. Donors may make charitable transfers in amounts up to $100,000 per individual per year. The gift is excluded from your gross income. Unless extended by Congress, this opportunity to both avoid income tax and help Saint Joseph's College is available only through December 31, 2007.

Cash
Individuals may contribute by check, credit card, or automatic withdrawl over the course of the Campaign and on a schedule that meets your needs. Please see the pledge form or call 1-800-227-1898.

Faculty/Staff Campaign

Saint Joseph's College faculty and staff are not only the heart of the institution, they have generously supported the College financially, as well.
