Kresge Challenge: $12.5 million by June 30, 2008
Saint Joseph's College received a grant from The Kresge Foundation in the amount of $750,000,
their largest award, toward the construction of athletic facilities and renovation of residential, academic,
and library facilities in conjunction with the College's 21st Century Campaign: Preserving
Tradition…Securing Our Future. The Foundation's core grant-making activity is its Challenge Grants
program. The challenge grant is intended to help the College in its public phase to meet the Campaign goal
of $12.5 million by June 30, 2008.
SJC President Ernest Mills, in announcing The Kresge Foundation challenge, said, "The Kresge
Foundation is a major national foundation supporting American higher education. Their endorsement of our
Campaign and the value of Saint Joseph's and its mission with their maximum award is a credit to our College."
The Kresge Foundation focuses on opportunities to strengthen leadership and giving through
challenge grants for capital projects. Grant recipients raise initial funds toward their respective projects
before requesting Foundation support. Kresge grants are then made on a challenge basis, requiring the raising
of the remaining balance by a deadline. It is an "all or nothing" challenge. President and Chief Executive
Officer of The Kresge Foundation Rip Rapson said, "With the aid of this challenge grant, we hope that SJC's
Campaign can become an even more strategic opportunity to connect with stakeholders and reach out to new donors,
volunteers, participants, and the general community."
Campaign Priorities
Improvements to Academic Centers
Arts and Science Building | $985,000
This building has been in constant use since 1914. Modern technology, renovated corridors and classrooms, and
climate controls are needed to preserve this important building and transform it into a first-class educational
facility.
Robinson Memorial Library | $1.6 million
The integration of fundamental modern technology is a major focus for this 28,000 square foot learning center
at SJC. Recent upgrades need to be enhanced with research hubs, group discussion space, climate controls and
accessibility for the disabled.
Theatre | $965,000
This grand old structure in the Arts and Science Building hasn't hosted a major renovation in more than six
decades. The Theatre will be restored and enhanced in its ambience, infrastructure, climate control, seating
and access. An endowment also is necessary for upkeep.
The Rev. Charles Banet, C.PP.S. Core Education Center | $270,000
Although this is a modern signature building on campus, its technology is more than 10 years old and needs to be
replaced and updated. The building's name gives rise to its importance - acting as a key academic center for
SJC's award-winning Core Curriculum.
Improvements to Athletics
Fieldhouse | $2.7 million
The oldest athletic facility on campus dates back more than 65 years. With half the student body registered as
student athletes, this facility needs more room for this growing population on campus. By creating a new locker
room, office facilities, and meeting spaces, the Fieldhouse can better serve its primary residents.
Football Field | $700,000
Football at SJC is a tradition which spans more than a century. The football field needs facility improvements
that include renovated and new bleachers, fencing, a new scoreboard, and improved press box access. This
renovation is needed to keep the tradition alive for the next 100 years for the athletes and fans alike.
Hanson Recreational Center | $350,000
Just like in the Fieldhouse, the foot traffic from an athletic student body has worn out this playing court.
The playing surfaces in both the Fieldhouse (back court) and Hanson Recreational Center have used up their
tred-life and now must be replaced.
Improvements to Campus Life
Noll and Bennett Halls | $1.3 million
On campus housing is an important recruiting tool for college life in the 21st century. In order to attract
and retain resident students, these two 50-year-old buildings need to be updated and modernized for the
190 students who will call them home. Both buildings need improvements in rooms and lounges, as well as
hallways and installation of modern sprinkler systems.
Endowment
In order to provide a quality college education well into the 21st century, Saint Joseph's College must provide
predictable sources of income above and beyond tuition. Establishing the following endowments at SJC, in addition
to incorprating project endowments into all capital priorities, secures an academic center of learning for
generations to come:
Founder's Fund | $1 million
This fund's purpose is to provide scholarships to worthy students in honor of the Missionaries of the Precious
Blood. This fund will make it possible for future generations of students to attend SJC.
Chapel Complex Endowment | $1 million
The icon of SJC is nearly 100 years old and needs constant attention. When established, this endowment will free
the Chapel from competing for College operating funds.
