Introductory Pscyhology, Fall 2006

Comments on organization:
  • He always had planned out what exactly we were going to lecture on that day.
  • Clear syllabus and due dates for readings and exams

  • Comments on preparation:
Everything was set for a specific day to discuss a different topic.

    Comments on communication:
  • I could understand when he would lecture but then did not understand how it related to the tests.
  • Descriptively described the subject matter being taught

  • Comments on availability:
When I needed to retake a test, he had a time when i could take it.

    Comments on grading:
I do not understand the absent policy and sports.

    General Comments about the Course
  • At first I was a Creative Writing major. But I registered for a psychology class to see which I liked better. I have always had an interest in Psychology, and this class made me realize it is something I want to do after college.
  • He knew what he was talking about I just couldn't relate it to the tests.

  • Comments on Learning

  • My experience was excellent and I learned a lot.
  • I have not learned as much as I thought I would during this course. But overall, it was a good class

    Statistics, Fall 2006

    Comments on organization:
Professor Seely is very organized. Everything has structure.

    Comments on preparation:
  • He was prepared for lecture and answering questions.
  • Every class had an objective, and he satisfied everyone (in my opinion).

  • Comments on communication:
  • He did an amazing job making material that could be confusing or complicated understandable so that we could succeed.
  • If I didn't understand the material in class, Dr. Seely would go out of his way to make sure students would grasp the material, either by having convenient, friendly, and social office hours, as well as suggesting the right tutors to do the trick.

  • Comments on availability:
  • He was always available.
  • Dr. Seely even came in early on a day where he didn't have class until late in the afternoon to make sure I could take a test because I wasn't going to be in class the next day.

  • Comments on grading:
    Very simple and straightforward

    General Comments about the Course:

  • I learned a lot and really feel I understand the material.
  • I really enjoyed this class. I love the way Dr. Seely prepares individuals for a test with his "Practice Test" handouts. I am very knowledgeable on the subject of statistics. This man keeps his composure and does not let anything bother him, at least ostensibly.
  • This is very hard subject material, and yet Prof. Seely was able to break it all down and make it understandable. I appreciate his teaching style and would definately take more of his classes.

  • Comments on Learning:

  • I really enjoyed this class, and I made sure I scheduled Dr. Seely for a class next semester!

    Human Sexualtiy, Fall 2006

    Comments on organization:
  • One of the few classes that completely stuck with the syllabus when it came to tests.
  • Topics were discussed in class

  • Comments on preparation:
  • He would always tell us what we would talk about before our next class

  • Comments on communication:
  • He often had us break into groups and talk about the issues brought up in class
  • We did not explain the material very often. Most of class was just group projects.

  • Comments on grading:
A little confusing, but no real complaints.

    General comments about the course:

  • This course was AMAZING to be in. There was always something exciting to learn about. Mainly things that we did not know existed. Highly recommmend this class to any student!
  • BEST COURSE EVER! Extremely interesting. Also, good good conversation starter, regardless of where you are.
  • This class is very interesting. A relaxing background to a hecktic world.
  • I thought the course, all though interesting, was very boring at times. We did the same thing everyday.

  • Comments on Learning:

  • Like how we were able to connect the material in a way that we can all understand. I did not like the forced groups though. I would rather be with people that I fell comfortable talking to about the things that were discussed in this class.
  • Overall I enjoyed your class. You made the class fun and interesting. Don't change a thing!
  • I wish he would have used the book more often but I learned so much from our group discussions

    Learning and Memory, Fall 2006

    Comments on organization:
  • All dates and objectives were outlined in the syllabus.
  • Great job making a syllabus and sticking to it- always informed students what to expect next. The students knew what to expect from the professor and what the professor expected of them.

  • Comments on preparation:
Never a class where professor came unprepared. Tied in very new and relevant research and news topics into class.

    Comments on communication:
Dr. Seely is a great teacher. He is real down to earth and makes excellent puns during class. I love taking him for my classes.

    Comments on availability:
Course office hours are not the most optimal for students, but you could set up an individual, separate appt easily enough.

    Comments on grading:
I liked that it was all spelled out in the syllabus.

    General Comments about the course:

  • This course was set up well and forced me to pay attention and put time into this.
  • I learned way more than I thought I would! I enjoyed this class throughly and think it should be required for every education student, and every college student. You learn more about yourself and also about understanding your classmates/students!

  • Comments on learning:

  • This course was very helpful. I learned more efficient ways to study, learn, and remember. I just need to remember to incorporate these ideas into my daily life.
  • I learned a lot in this course. Being tested everyday helped me retain the information.

    Introductory Psychology, Winter 2006

    Comments on organization:
  • We stuck to the syllabus like glue.
  • Dr. Seely always stuck to the syllabus very well.
  • The syllabus was helpful, and Dr. Seely kept on track well.
  • He was very well organized and went by everything exactly the was it was in his syllabus.

  • Comments on preparation:
  • He always had his tea.
  • He always seemed to come into class knowing what he was going to say. He would always say he could go on and on about certain things. I liked that, it showed me that he really knew his material.
  • He always had all his handouts and

  • Comments on communication:
  • he really creates an atmosphere that makes him easy to understand but very unpredictable.
  • If there was something I did not understand in the book Dr. Seely did a very good job of explaining it to us and I in class.
  • He explained everything very well and always stopped and answered everyone's questions.

  • Comments on availability:
  • Even with the map to his office it is hard to find.

  • Comments on grading:
  • This grading system is the best I have ever seen. I think that all classes should use the same. It gives the best representation of the grading scale.
  • I understood how the grading system worked, but it I did not find it encouraging. Because everything was based off of a curve I think that students were not challenged to do their best.
  • I really like how he made it clear that there will be no discrimination between men and women
  • I liked the grading system that he used.

  • General Comments about the course:

  • It was very useful and eye opening.
  • I like the overhead work, Dr. Seely did 90% of his teaching from the overhead and I believe that is very helpful.
  • I think that this course was a big waste of time. I did not feel challenged to work hard in this class. I think that in the future it would be beneficial to have a introduction class offered to biology majors. Many of the concepts discussed were incredibly repetative. I think that by spliting the class it would also make the curve grading system more effective because I would feel more challenged "competing" against more competent students.
  • Professor Seely is a wonderful teacher. The class is interesting and easy to understand. The only reason for students to be failing this class is because of lack of studying or paying attention.
  • it was a good course to take
  • I really enjoyed being in his class.

  • Comments on Learning:

  • who thought I would learn so much in an intro class?
  • I think that learning would be enhanced by not having a curved grading system.
  • i learned a lot
  • I didn't learn that much but thats not because of the way he taught or anything its because i already took psychology in high school.

    Physiological Psychology, Winter 2006

    Comments on organization:
The syllabus was absolutely a wonderful resource throughout the semester. The class knew exactly what to expect on a daily basis. The class NEVER deviated from the syllabus, nor was it a problem. The entire semester was very organized. Thank you for that!

    Comments on preparation:
Absolutely!! Prof. Sealy is very knowledgeable in the course material and was a constant source of information. He was willing to answer any Q's that were asked in a very thorough manner. This was the best course I have taken at Saint Joseph's College so far.

    Comments on communication:
  • Some of the concepts like neurons and action potential were hard for me to follow. I think that we should have spent more time with the basics and a little less time on the details.
  • At times I would be very confused, so I would ask Q's about it. He would then rephrase the information, and normally I was able to understand the material from the second explanation.

  • Comments on availability:
He was available... but would have been much more convenient if he had been in the core or science building. His office in the chapel discouraged me from seeking him out more often. He might enjoy that statement... but was not a positive for the the individual class member.

    General Comments about the course:

  • This was a hard class, but I think I learned and retained a significant amount of information.
  • I would have to say that this course isn't easy but it also is probably my favorite so far. I learned so much and even though I might not have an A+, I still feel like I learned a lot from Dr. Seely. He's probably the greatest professor I've ever had!
  • I always enjoy Dr. Seely's courses and look forward to them every day. I'm not sure how he could improve upon his methods yet he always seems to do so from semester to semester. He truly is an excellent professor.
  • This was an extremely difficult course. The material is difficult and precise. Prof. Sealy was able to make the information understandable and interesting. The course actually became very personal to me in many ways. I learned a large amount of information because of this course; the actual amount, is almost mind-blowing ;)

  • Comments on Learning:

  • I learned so much and this course definitely helped with my career choice!
  • I felt that the methodology employed allowed me to get a firm grasp on the key concepts of biopsychology. It also rekindled my interest in behavioral neuroscience, and, for that, I am immensely grateful.
  • The weekly quizzes were instrumental in my learning the material. They were definately not my favorite part of the class, WHILE going through it... but I am extremely happy for them now.

    Core 6, Winter 2006

The strengths of this discussion group were...

  • were the essential questions, it opened the floor for a discussion
  • People were open to talking, and Seely always made sure everyone got to state their opinion.
  • There were a few good debates over evolution and other aspects of the evolutionary process.

  • The thing I'd really suggest changing in the way this group ran is...

  • The only thing i did not like about this course was the essential questions we had to do. It seems a little childish because if we have any questions were are capable of asking in class and the questions take up alot of class time when we could be doing something else. I don't think the essential questions are neccessary to do in future classes. The lectures are pretty much cut and dry. Besides, I know I learned this stuff in grammar school.
  • only on the study session for the mid term and the final, I think there should be one acrossed the bored, it is unfair to groups that one teacher gives them almost all anwsers while another one does not direct his group in the same mamer
  • Less essential questions.
  • No more essential questions!

    Inroductory Psychology, Fall 2005

    Comments on organization:
  • The class was very well organized, and did not stray from the syllabus very much at all.
  • organization was fine.
  • Class dates were all met and all assignment were due as stated in the Syllabus
  • Had outlines ready for every week
  • The syllabus was very helpful.

  • Comments on preparation:
  • He always knew what he was going to say. I never felt like this class was a waste of my time.
  • He always came prepared.
  • Class ran smoothly with no downtime between subjects.
  • His lectures were well-planned and very interesting.

  • Comments on communication:
  • all he did was overhead notes..which is really boring. I think more creative methods could have been used.
  • The instructor allowed us to use our own thinking before he gave us the correct answers.
  • He explained everything thoroughly and lectured very well.

  • Comments on availability:
  • He actually let me finish an essay on a taest in his office.
  • I met with my instructor several times after class for extra credit assignments, as well as, help with some topics.

  • General Comments about the Class:

  • I love this class. I wish it was two semesters long.
  • I liked the Intro Psychology class. It was a very useful class even if you have already taken a psychology class before or if you have not taken a psychology class before. Taught the marterial very well and explained the topics we covered in a way we would understand what he was talking about.
  • Fun Class
  • Never felt lost in the class. Always knew the routine and material.
  • I learned so much during this class and was always interested.

  • Comments on Learning:

  • I liked how my instructor used an overhead to teach the material when he was lecturing. It helped the whole class understand what he was saying and kept him on the topic of what he was discussing to his class. I really liked the class and it has helped me futher my knowledge of Psychology and what it is all about as a whole.
  • Very good class, enjoyed when study guides were integrated into the reviews for tests.
  • I only had two problems with the the class learning situation. The two girls in the back talking each class period for most of the class time and the ringing student cell phones were extremely distracting. My only suggestion would be to dismiss these students or have some sort of rule banning these situations for the other students who want to be there and learn.

    Human Sexuality, Fall 2005

    Comments on organization:
  • activities and discussion followed the text, and the class flowed in a natural progression through the topic
  • No complaints.

  • Comments on preparation:
  • all but a good projector, but always had everything ready and was swift in returning assignments
  • Dr. Seely supplemented almost all of our readings; this made the class very interesting and fun to attend.

  • Comments on communication:
  • very willing to take extra time in further explanation if a topic seemed unclear. Made a focal point of what was important, and what we should spend our time studying. The little things were made clear to us so we were not concentrating on the irrelavent details
  • The group discussions about certain topics in class correlated very well with information obtained via reading the book.
  • The way the class was organized was clever and effective.

  • Comments on availability:
    · didn't always get e-mails confirming information sent to him.

    Comments on grading:
    · The normal seely curve which i have become adjusted to was not usable due to the high grades, so it was confusing at first as to whether or not the grading system would change back, but he made it clear very quickly

    General Comments about the Course:

  • The course was very very good. It would have been much better with a smaller class, would generate more discussion and we would walk away with a better understanding of human sexuality.
  • I'm really glad I took this course. It's cemented my decision to continue with psychology as a career.
  • very fun class and dr. seely is a great teacher.
  • I really enjoyed this course, it has made me more comfortable with talking about my sexuality.

  • Comments on Learning:

  • Excellent.
  • I would change nothing bout this class. i enjoyed it, and learned a lot for it. thanks prof. seely

    Cognitive Psychology, Fall 2005

    Comments on Organization:
  • felt the course was disorganized because we never really knew what we would be focusing on that day...sometimes the syllabus would say to read a certain chapter for that class period and sometimes we would skip around a lot in that chapter on just not focus as much in that chapter as much as the other....i don't think it would have been as much of an issue if the book was a little easier to follow because I like to change things up and i don't like the same thing over and over but I found the book extremely hard to understand and it became really difficult because if I didn't understand the class notes completely i couldn't really go back to the book as a reference because i found the book even more confusing...maybe cognitive psy comes easy to the other students but it defantly didn't come easy to me because it was more abstract and it would have helped to have a more structured text book because i felt like this text book was a foreign language to me.

  • Comments on Communication:
  • Seely explained the material in as easy of a way as he could. If someone did not understand an concept, especially an abstract one, he spent a lot of time going into detail about the concept and using fun examples, to clear up any confusion.
very in depth discussions on very detailed, sometimes abstract concepts explained very clearly and thoughouly
  •  again i really don't think the material not getting explained as well as i would have liked would have been as much of an issue if the text book was easier to read and understand because sometimes it takes awhile for hard material to settle in and i understand and i am the type of student that learns better by reading my text book and writing down notes from it before i go into the class lecture but i felt like i got absolutly no where i read the text book the days prior to class...it did nothing to help aid in the class lecture...that i think is the main problem because a professor can only simplify a subject like cognitive psy so much because it's so abstract so a more easly understandable text book would really really help like last years biopsy book...i think it needs to be structured like that and it really helps if the book comes with a cd rom because them it usually has practice aids on it which helps me study and learn the material much better.

  • Comments on availability:
Office hours were clearly stated in syllabus

    Comments on grading:
i would agree that i overall understood how my final grade would be calcualted but sometimes i felt like my quiz essay questions were grade kinda harshly while other times they seemed to be graded more leanent...would like to see an explantion on the paper as to why i missed those essay points because otherwise it leaves the student to just assume you might have just been in a bad mood that day and i'm not the only one that thinks that....also i'm not sure if having a quiz everyday is really showing how much a student knows about the material because we are only given a short amount of time to finish the quiz and some people require more thinking time when answering essay questions because we are all different....i presonally like it better when a teacher does a test weekly rather than daily because it gives the student more time to review the material because cognitive psy is not one of those subjects that just clicks with you...i think we need more time.

    General Comments about the Course:

  • overall i think cognitive psy is interesting but is so abstract that it sometimes seems greek to me...like a foreign language and it just seemed like we were going so fast and the text book just didn't help at all. the text book was my bigeest problem because i couldn't go back and use it as a reference to help better understand the class material. my next concern was the quizes because i felt for one we weren't given enough time to really think through the answers completly because some of us are slower when it comes to taking tests and i felt like we had to rush so much through the material that i was just digging myself a bigger hole with the quizes....i think it would have been better to have a test weekly instead of ever class period because we were being tested over material that we were just introduced too a day before and a lot of it really semmed like greek or just totally foreign so it would have been better to have an extra class period to review that new material.
  • Great course! I learned so much!
  • Very good college style class, taught very well.
  • I really liked the quiz-a-day. I've never had this or even heard this in a class, and I thought it was awesome.
  • I think the course made learning fun. I loved the days when did experiments or hands on learning, and I remembered the most from those days. Sometimes I had trouble following the material, but that may have been just because the subject matter was sometimes difficult. I feel the course made me think (haha) in different ways, and pushed me to think outside the lines

    Introductory Psychology, Winter 2005

    Comments on organization:
    ·  Did a good job following the syllabus we received on the first day of class
    · Professor Seely ran a very organized and informative class.
    · The class was well organized. The syllabus was followed faithfully. anything we needed to know was on the syllabus.
    · this class was structured very well. professor seely would give lecture every time we met and the notes were organized very well.

    Comments on preparation:
    · You came prepared to class, you had all the notes and material we needed.

    Comments on communication:
    · I thought you did a good job at teaching us the material. you did it in a fun learning way.
    · the teaching methods that professor seely used were great. this class was without doubt the best class that i have had this year. this teacher was very enthusiastic about the subject matter

     Comments on availability:
    · i was not in need of this
    · You were available if we needed you, and also you responded to emails quickly.

    Comments on grading:
    · I thought the gradins system was fair and accurate.

    General comments about the course:
    · Dr. Seely is awesome and made the class really fun!
    · It was very general. I would have liked to go a little more in depth on some things. I felt like a subject was barely mentioned and then we moved on from it.
    · I enjoyed this course very much. I took it in high school and my teacher wasn't very good so i didn't enjoy it really. But I acutally enjoyed it this time around.

    Comments on learning:
    · I would have liked to have gone more in-depth.
    · An intro class seems hard because of all the information you are exposed to, however, professor Seely was really assertive when it came to material he presented in the classroom.
    · I though the material was easily learned the way you taught it to us.

    Experimental Psychology, Winter 2005

    Comments on preparation:
    · The man is a genius.

    Comments on communication:
    · See above...
    · Dr. Seely was very good at explaining difficult concepts. He also made me feel like I was free to speak up whenever I didn't understand something.
    · a major strength of the class

    Comments on availability:
    · He's a busy genius.
    · During our experiments, Dr. Seely helped us with our papers as often as we revised them. Also, when I went to his office because I didn't know what to do with my data. He sat with me so I could get it done properly and understood what I was doing.

     General comments about the course:
    · One word... Genius.
    · The projects we did tied all of the material we covered in class together. It was nice to actually get to apply what we learned. I think the projects added to my comphrension of the material.
    · interesting and fun

    Comments on learning:
    · It was another Seely special. We're lucky to have him.
    · Before this class I had no idea how to properly conduct an experiment. Now, I know the different kinds of experiments, how to choose which one to use, and how to conduct them. While I probably could not do one on my own yet, I am confident that this class has given me the foundation to develop my skills.
    · Prof was great at explaining in several ways so that we'd understand it, and he made sure we did before he moved on

    Physiological Psychology, Winter 2005

    Comments on organization:
    · We followed the syllabus almost to a tee.

    Comments on communication:
    · Dr. Seely made sure that we understood the materials and was willing to explain things over until they were understood. Also, the in class activities related to the material and helped a lot with understanding.

     Comments on grading:
    · The grading system was explained the first day of class and he stuck to it. There were no surprises.

     General comments about the course:
    · Doctor Seely is very knowledgable about many areas in psychology, but is always able to admit when he doesn't know something and offers to get the information for you. He is patient and entertaining with his students. Also, Dr Seely will explain concepts until everyone understands and openly encourages students to ask questions.
    · more interesting than I thought it could be

    Comments on learning:
    · I LOVED this class! I really feel like I learned a lot, and I like that it was stuff I could actually use in real life.
    · The method in which this class was taught was extremely beneficial to me. Having an exam every week may seem stressful, however with such a dense subject it was easier to study for the exams and perform better because of the format.
    · very practical interesting information

Humanity in the Universe II (Core 6), Winter 2005

The strengths of this discussion group were ...
    · After having had numerous Core discussion groups in which discussions were either limited or nonexistent, I was pleasantly surprised to be exposed to a variety of opinions; diversity was played up in discussions, and this made the discussions more interesting and important to me. I actually wanted to go to class.
    · Just the fact that the class and Seely got along pretty good and everyone had a sense of humor is what I think was great during discussion. It made it more interesting.
    · With the horrible material we had, Seely made it as interesting as possible for us. He made the labs seem somewhat interesting, even though there was absolutely no hope for them.
    · There isn't much to critique on the part of my discussion leader. The complaints I have about cores 5 and 6 are unrelated to my professors, rather the material they were required to cover. The reason that I knew that I could get away with not attending a lecture was that they were almost entirely identical to the lectures i recieved in my General Biology class. I could pull my old bio notes out and literally read them WORD FOR WORD during some of the lectures. I find these 2 cores to be not only the most worthless and biggest waste of time, but Im appalled that I am required to take 2 classes with 85% of the material related to evolution at a Catholic college. My reasoning for being so appalled is that the goal appears to be to make us change our point of view about the issue and as the profs say "to make us challenge our morals." What other Catholic school does that to their students?!?!
    · Alot of students that enjoyed talking and giving their own opinions.
    · I really like how much we discussed random topics that somehow tied in to Core 6. I like hearing about more than creationism vs. evolution, so the farther we got in this class, the more I enjoyed it.
    · i loved the review games that we played to prepare for the midterm. they helped sooooo much!
    · Excellent professor, always gave common ideas a new spin and perspective.

The thing I'd really suggest changing in the way this group ran is ...
    · Nothing. It was really enjoyable.
    · I felt that our discussion group was good, but the material we had to discuss was awful. Core 6 material seemed to repeat itself over and over and over again. Lectures said the same things throughout the whole semester. New material would make this course much better, but it needs help before a successful discussion can be ran. An example, while the cave art lecture was good and original, the lab of doing cave art was ridiculous. We are juniors in college and spent 1 1/2 hours fingerpainting. Seriously, I thought I'd moved on from that. I am not spending 25G+ a year so I know how to fingerpaint after graduation. Also, if you had taken the general biology class here, some of the lectures and labs were exactly the same as we had completed in gen bio. So I was hearing the same information for the 3rd and 4th times even from the beginning! Core 6 really has a tremendous amount of room for improvement. I do not envy any one who still has to take it. It, along with Core 5, are probably the worst classes I have taken here. And it is not my discussion professors, but the material itself. Core 5 and 6 do not compare to the rest of the Core program and in my eyes, will be blocked from my Core experience at St. Joe because the courses make it so tainted!
    · Cave art??? Am I in the fourth grade again? Im not paying $27,000 a year to paint a picture using charcoal. I can do that for free at home. Change the labs...they are all the same as the gen bio labs as well. Better yet, drop cores 5 and 6 entirely from the curriculum so that students dont have to double up with 7 & 8 (because 5 & 6 are a waste of brain cells) and instead require Gen bio and Gen Chem.
    · Attempt to involve the entire class more than just a few students.
    · Grading on weekly responses didn't make much sense. (grading out of 10 but never giving anything higher than an 8) The difference between a 7 and an 8 seemed pretty much random.
    · The only problem I had with the final was the time. It's not that the questions were difficult, because I felt like I could have answered all of them reasonably well. It's just that when it comes to writing, I'm a perfectionist and it takes me awhile to think of exactly how I want to put things. I have all the ideas there, it's just a matter of getting them out on paper--which I'm a little slower at. So the time was a problem, and I didn't get finished--which may seem like a reflection of me not knowing what I was doing, when really it was just not having enough time to get it all out.
    · I'd add more information on genetics to the lectures. If you look at the percentage of people who discussed a genetics related issue in our research projects, it is a far greater number than those who looked at evolutionary issues. PLEASE MAKE CORE 6 MORE THAN JUST EVOLUTION VS. CREATIONISM. We hear so much about that ONE topic that I got sick and tired of it before we even finished Core 5, and then to add MORE to the same tired subject was just about enough to make me not want to go to lecture. Discussion for Core 6 was much better, especially after we hit the half-way point in the semester. The labs we do for the first half don't mean much to me because I understood the creation/evolution thing BEFORE I CAME TO COLLEGE! Can we have a Core 6 class that doens't talk about that topic? I'd even take the class over again if we started discussing humanity in the universe and not pre-humanity all over again. Thanks Dr. Seely for a great semester in Core!

    Comments on availability:

    · Dr. Seely always had time for us to meet with him in his office, even if we just wanted to talk about the most pointless things.

    Comments on grading:
    ·  I wish the quizes were worth more, for some reason I always did better on the quizes than on the tests.

    · I loved the class, I don't think any teacher could have made it as interesting as he did.

    Introductory Psychology, Fall 2003

    Comments on organization:
    · The syllabus was laid out to see what was going to happen all semester. We basicly knew when quizzes were going to be and when we had to have the readings done. I think that he did a good job of letting us know what was going to happen.
    · Very easy to follow along, yet not so structured that the class was boring
    · We recieved a syllabus to begin with, and we were responsible to follow that ourselves and know what is coming up. I liked that.
    · everything was well organized and followed a rational progression and the book.
    · We always followed the syllabus in our class. We knew when assingments were due, and when we are going to have a test!
    · This course was very organized!
    · Those darn quizes! Yes the syllabus was promptly followed.
    · dr. seely always gave us an outline of class discussion for each chapter and from day one, all tests and chapter due dates were dated in the syllabus.

     Comments on preparation:
    ·  He was always prepared and had a very lively class.
    · always seemed on top of things.
    · The instructor was very prepared for class. He knew where we left off and did not waste any time in getting started.
    · I really enjoyed Dr. Seely. I think he is a great teacher and I recommend all of his classes!
    · like clockwork.

    Comments on communication:
    ·  If we had a problem with what he was saying we could always ask him to explain or ask a question on the subject.
    · explained material extremely well
    · easy to talk to, never held back if i needed to ask a question. Explained thoroughly.
    · Gave examples and made sure we understood before moving on to other material.
    · My instructor was very good at breaking everything down so that I could understand all the different materials being covered.
    · There were areas of greyness, but instructor offered help outside of class.
    · dr. seely always gave life examples with class lectures, which i found to be helpful in retaining the information as well as being able to relay that information back to someone else.
    ·  he spoke to us as if we already knew everything

     Comments on availability:
    · I could meet with him if I needed to, all I had to do was send an email or stop him after class.
    · I had to take an Exam early and I emailed him and he responded very quickly and he was in his office at the hours that he said he would be.
    · dr. seely encouraged office hours (whether having trouble with grades or just a question) and was available to us through email, etc.

     Comments on grading:
    · THat was also on the syllabus which I really like. That way I would know what was coming and how much it was going to affect my grade.
    · I like how we were graded according to the grades of our peers. There's a lot of competition in this society, so that taught me that you need to try to do better than the next guy.
    · with every test, dr. seely gave the opportunity to ask questions, double check any test corrections, and to present an argument if we felt our answer would fit. we were also repeatedly told about extra credit assignments as well as what attendence would weigh on our grades.
    · he had a weird way of grading that i still dont understand

    General Comments about the course:
    · I really enjoyed this course and I am glad I took it. I think that Dr. Seely is a great professor and I would take him again in a heartbeat. He made things interesting and I learned a lot from him.
    · This was a great course! It's too bad that I'm not planning to major in psychology, but as a result of taking this class, I may change my mind!
    · very enthusiastic, intelligent, and humorous.
    · It challenged me more than I thought it would!
    · I enjoyed the course very much and had a lot of fun and learned a lot!
    · i found the course to be very interesting, but as far as it being required for the criminal justice minor, i would have liked to have taken the class earlier on as it may have helped as a base course, more than one further into the minor.

    Comments on learning:
    · I learned a lot from this course and will take the knowledge with me as I move on into other things. I really enjoyed the class.
    · my only complaint about the learning process during this class was on the lecture to test recall. i could understand the material as presented in lecture and through the book, but to relate the given information with the test questions always felt like a hit or miss. i knew i had a one in four chance of choosing the correct answer, but the questions always felt like they belonged to a different course. like greek... and analogy questions make my brain hurt.

    Human Sexuality, Fall 2004

    Comments on preparation:
    · Instuctor came prepared with handouts, overheads, and general knowledge about the topics that were going to be discussed. This was very much appreciated.
    · Dr. Seely always came to class prepared. He had a plan for each class and I'm almost positive we got through the material he wanted to cover each class.

    Comments on communication:
    · Dr. Seely answered all of the questions very clearly if we didn't understand something
    · Dr. Seely has great communication with his students- both in and out of class.
    · Although the class was difficult he did explain and teach the material in a way that I could understand. If I didn't understand the material it wasn't his fault that's for sure.
    · He never went over what was in the book but he did go over some factual knowledge.

    Comments on availability:
    · Very flexible with taking tests and making up work when an absent was necessary.
    · Doors are open to go and talk to Dr. Seely in his office. When I would go to get help he was always nice and never seemed annoyed and bothered that I was there getting help.

    General comments about the course:
    · This course is very interesting and very informational. You can ask any question that you do not have an answer to, and either the professor or another student has an answer.
    · I really enjoyed this course. I learned a lot of things. The course goals that were set before the class began were, without a doubt, met.
    · Good discussions and Seely was very open to answering our questions the best he could.
    · Every student, adult, college student, middle school, and high school student should be REQUIRED to take DR. Seely's Human Sexuality Course! I never went a day without learing several new things about myself and understanding and becoming more compassionate toward others! I leave this class with a more open mind, better educated about what human sexuality involves and how complex it really is, and realize just how naive I was to the topic prior to taking the class. Wow- I'm so impressed! I've also changed so many of my beliefs that I thought I was set on, including those regarding homosexuality, abortion, and prostitution. Take this class and your mind will be stimulated, your morals challenged, and your emotions provoked. Thank you Dr. Seely!!!!!
    · This course was very informative and definately worth while. Great class!
    · The class needs to be smaller, maybe break it up into two classes if possible.

    Comments on learning:
    · I learned a lot about things that I should have known before. I think everyone should take this class who is in college because it's quite an eye opener.
    · AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!
    · Absolutely a great class for anyone to take.
    · The tests were hard becaue he never went over any of the stuff in the book. However, the study guides that he gave us for one of the tests made it a lot easier.

    Human Sexuality, Fall 2003

    Comments on organization:
    · dr seely is extremely organized and that is very helpful to students regarding deadlines and course expectations

    Comments on preparation:
    · to hold a 3 hour class is difficult and it was always very interesting, at times entertaining, and very well put together
    · He always kepted us intersted in the class.
    · Seely did an awesome job coming up with activities and group work that kept us interested for two and a half hours.

    Comments on communication:
    · yes, this topic hits home to people so there were no problems in understanding or following the material.

    Comments on availability:
    · his office hours are clearly listed and there are plenty of them. also he is available by apt or before and after class. he is one of the easiest professors to get in contact with.

    Comments on grading:
    · he uses a curve which is great because your grade is based on your peers. other teachesrs should think about using it!

    General comments about the course:
    · It was a very fun and interesting course. I really enjoyed it. The only thing that was hard to me was the tests. But overall, the course was taught well.
    · Great class! Everyone should take Human Sexuality!
    · I wish that the class was smaller. This would facilitate discussions about some very personal and important topics. It can be difficult to discuss some things such as rape and pornography with sixteen or seventeen people staring at you. You would be surprised at how much lowering class enrollment to twelve or fourteen would help with this matter.
    · the class was great. i had heard a lot about it and i was very happy with it. the only suggestion i have is to throw away that birth canal movie. that was horribly boring.
    · It was a fun class and I really enjoyed it.
    · Great class! Very informative and enjoyable. There was a lot of group activities that helped with understanding the material better.
    · Dr. Seely is a great teacher and I recommend giving him a raise!
    · Great class, i really enjoyed it and it definitely opened me up to talk about sexuality in a mature, responsible way.
    · I loved this class! I had soo much fun and it made learning the material a lot easier

    Statistics, Fall 2004

    Comments on organization:
    · The only way I can understand math is for it to be so clearly organized....well done!
    · As usual Dr. Seely was well organized throughout the entire semester. The class knew in advance what was expected of them.
    · He is always on top of things

    Comments on preparation:
    · very prepared, but no against changing plans according to our needs

    Comments on communication:
    · A strength of Seely's is that he is very good at explaining complex material in a way students can understand.
    · I was actually surprised at how well I understood much of the information in this class...I was prepared to just try to get by, but I really get most of it!
    · Dr. Seely not only explained how to do the problems; he also showed us where the numbers were coming from and what was going on. This made concepts much easier to understand!
    · explained in several different ways if we needed it
    · He answered any questions i may have had through out the class

    ·       If people had questions he would take ample time to explain the problem at hand.

    Comments on availability:
    ·  He....was.
    · Any time i needed help he always made time for me

    ·       He had reqular offices hours in addition to times that worked best for the students.

    Comments on grading:
    · After each test he would breakdown the class grades so we were more than aware of our grade in the class.

    General comments about the course:
    · I usually become bored by math classes because I like ambiguity. Seely made the class interesting at least.
    · Very well taught...I never thought I could do so well in a "math" class.
    · After suffering all semester with an illness that almost ended my college education, Dr. Seely took time out of his busy schedule to help me catch up after missing much of the first half of the semester. His patience and kindness are his strong attributes and with his help I was able to comprehend the material and improve my overall grade. Even though statistics has been the most difficult class I have taken so far, Dr. Seely taught the material in a step by step method making it easier to understand. If you have to take statistics make sure it is with Dr.Mark Seely
    · HE is a great professor

    ·       For me to say that a class involving math was fun will probably never happen again, but I can honestly say that this class was fun. I enjoyed learning and I feel like I got more out of the class than just how to do a certain formula.

    ·
Statistics is a fairly dry subject matter and Dr Seely made it interesting. I learned a lot of useful information.

    Comments on learning:
    · I feel as though I learned quite a bit.
    · Statistics is a difficult course, especially if your mathematics background is lacking in the knowledge needed to complete the problems assigned. But even though I did not have algebra in high school, I eventually caught on with the help of Dr. Seely. Thank You
    ·       It was essential to understand certain applications before one could proceed in the course. Each of these applications were explained and clarified so each student could succeed in the course.

    Comments on organization:
    · the syllabus was very helpful
    · followed everything very well

    Comments on preparation:
    · Very detailed notes
    · always had the problems worked out to keep the class moving

    Comments on communication:
    · Very effective
    · I understood all the material covered in this class
    · He explained and went over things very well
    · Dr. Seely is a good professor.
    · always was available even if a student did not understand

    Comments on availability:
    · Made office hrs public to everyone
    · helped me more than once

    Comments on grading:
    · Little harsh on test grades. Many points lost for small errors on tests.
    · i like the way it is graded in proportion to the other students

    General comments about the course:
    · I have taken this class twice now. I have not gotten the kind of grade that looks like an A, B, C, or D. But I have tried like hell. I think instead of making the class a individual type of subject, it should be more of a social type of class. By this I mean, it should resemble the type of enviornment that we would work in in the real world. For instance, quizes should be done with as a group, and not individually. This way, if a mistake is made, its not a costly as a minor one that one person will miss. A social research class would deffinately incorporate the type of approach the students should expect to see in the real world.
    · This was a very interesting class. I just like to do math, I guess.
    · This was a difficult class but Prof. Seely made the information very easy to understand.
    · This class was hard but I evetually learned a lot
    · very glad i took this class now to understand what goes on further in Psychology

    Comments on learning:
    · Dr. Seeley is wonderful, that is all I can say.
    · Refer to my previous statement.
    · This class was very interesting and I enjoyed it.
    · Very good class
    · Thank you!

    Learning and Memory, Fall 2004

    Comments on organization:
    · Everything that was on the syllabus was exactly what was on the quizes. It was easier to follow and study this way.
    · Very organized and clearly stated in syllabus
    · Great organization. I always knew what was expected of me, and when everything was due. (reading wise)

    Comments on preparation:
    · always had overheads ready for us to write notes
    · Thousands of notes. But all very interesting.
    · Frequently had outside material to supplement book.
    · Always well prepared. Never came to class without some form of over head or notes.

    Comments on communication:
    · he is very good at this
    · Seely has very good explanations for things and gave us many examples to help us understand the material.
    · Brings information to my level of understanding.
    · I understood most of what was taught, and the stuff i didnt get from lecture i figured out by my notes.

    Comments on availability:
    · Always had an open door and willing to help.
    · I only came to see him once, but when i did he was there.

    Comments on grading:
    · Always had exams/quizzes ready for the next class period.

     General comments about the course:
    · This course material had the potential to be very uninteresting. Seely overcame that and the classes attendence probably showed it.
    · The material was appealing to my interest during the semester.
    · I learned a lot in this class and it was fun to listen to all Seely's stories, again.
    · The one class I never wanted to miss.
    · Having the daily exams certainly kept me on top of the reading. The down side to having daily exams was if I was having trouble understanding something, my grade suffered without me having a chance to figure the problem out.

    ·  loved it...lots of fun

    ·  Prof. Seely is one of my favorite teachers. He makes me want to learn.

    ·  To many test. We were not given enough time to learn the material before a test. On the other hand it was nice to have so many test because if wer screwed up on a test there were plenty of other test to make it up

    Comments on learning:

    ·  I learned enough to realize that the processes of "learning and memory" are very interesting.

    ·  I think there should more ways of presenting the material. It is hard to take notes every single day of class. It gets boring and I eventually started zoning out during class. I would be writing everything on the overhead, but my mind was definitly some place else.
    · Learning was easy, since we had quizes every day. I learned a lot about how my thinking works and how to increase my study skills.
    · Learning and memory are both inevitable yet both take work to expand on.
    · this was a grat class, and i would recomend it to anyone who is willing to put time into learning.

    Cognitive Psychology, Fall 2003

    Comments on organization:
    · I just don't think we should of had quizzes every day
    · Everyday you could expect a quiz as stated from day one!

    Comments on preparation:
    · Dr. Seely is *always* prepared well for class.
    · He also tried to utilize classroom tests to make proofs.

    Comments on communication:
    · Cognitive Psychology is not something that is easily explained, but Dr. Seely knows what he is talking about and can put it in words we understand.
    · Cog. Psych is a very difficuly subject matter, and Dr. Seely did and excellent job of creating scenarios and providing examples that we could use to understand the material.
    · The information that is covered in this class is not easily learned, and I can't believe that it is easy to teach to undergrads. I think that Dr. Seely did a wonderful job with such little interest on the part of his students. :)
    · The material was very hard, but he did his best
    · Dr. Seely is a very good Professor.
    · Occasionally, I was lost, but the material was confusing itself.

    Comments on availability:
    · Always there when we needed him to answer questions

    Comments on grading:
    · There is never any doubt as to what your grade will be in Dr. Seely's classes.
    · Too many quizzes
    · same as stats

    General comments about the course:
    · Veyr interesting class that I feel I learned quite a bit from. I've always enjoyed Dr. Seely's classes and his quiz every class period method worked well for this class because there was so much material that was covered in just one day.
    · I really enjoyed the fact that Dr. Seely was teaching this class since it is his field of interest. However, I believe that, overall, the addition of the textbook was not necessary. I realize that it was in response to student's complaints about taking notes, but I believe that we most likely took almost as many notes as previous classes. Because of the depth of knowledge of Dr. Seely, I feel that the class would more than satisfactory with notes that he felt were necessary as guidelines for the learning objectives in this class.
    · This was a great course...very interesting, but hard
    · I thought that was a very good and informative class. It was also very
